BARBARIAN

THE COMPLETE BUILD GUIDE
SEASON 14 · DEATH AWAKENING◆PATCH 3.1.3◆LAST VERIFIED AUG 17, 2026

Four genuinely different Barbarians, every skill point from level 2 to 70 — and straight answers to the questions every Barbarian guide skips: why am I carrying four weapons, which one am I actually hitting things with, and what do the other three do all day?

■ 2H BLUDGEONING ‖ DUAL WIELD × 2 ▬ 2H SLASHING
▶WHAT CHANGED RECENTLY — SEASON 14 IN SIX LINES
◆ The Ancients rose. Patch 3.0.2 fixed Arsenal swaps despawning Call of the Ancients, and Ramaladni’s (all-skills since Lord of Hatred) now scales them — Ancient Skills at ×200% are the highest non-bugged damage in the game.
◆ Wrath of the Berserker now boosts ALL damage by +30%[x] for its duration — every build here presses it on real fights.
◆ Fury from taking damage was capped at 0.5 per 1% of Life lost. You can no longer face-tank your way to a full bar; shout instead.
◆ Challenging Shout’s damage upgrade no longer affects bosses — they cannot be taunted. Bossing setups take the defensive node.
◆ Nerf list: Limitless Rage reworked (0.15–0.2% per point, was up to 1.5%), Cremator’s 70–100% → 45–65%, Tidal to 1–3 stacks, Dominate glyph 23.6% → 1.8%, Heir of Perdition 18% → 15%, Endurant Faith to 15–20%. Old build sheets over-value all six.
◆ Patch 3.1.3 (Aug 12) was seasonal objectives and class bug fixes — no Barbarian balance moves. Earlier fixes: Whirling Lunging Strike’s Dust Devils, the Sescheron’s Fury shrink/grow visual.

THE CLASS IN FIVE IDEAS

1 · YOU CARRY FOUR WEAPONS
A two-handed bludgeon, a two-handed slasher, and a dual-wield pair — all equipped at once. You benefit from the affixes and Legendary Aspects of all four at all times; you usually swing only one or two. Part II exists because nobody believes this at first.
2 · FURY IS EARNED, NOT GIVEN
The resource only flows in combat and drains when you leave it. Early on it is rationed; every endgame build here prints it with Rallying Cry — and then holds a full bar on purpose, because held Fury is a damage stat this season.
3 · SHOUTS ARE THE ROTATION
War Cry is damage and Berserking, Rallying Cry is Fury, Challenging Shout is survival and Fortify. They are not utility — they are the engine, and all four builds run all three.
4 · BERSERKING IS THE BASELINE
A buff — +25%[x] damage, +30% movement, red glow, red bar — that endgame Barbarians keep up permanently, mostly automatically. Half your items only pay while it is on. Losing it is the most common "my build broke" of the class.
5 · MELEE, BUT NEVER PAROCHIAL
Everything happens at arm's length — and yet Whirlwind covers screens with Dust Devils, Rend launches a wave of fire, and the Ancients fight rooms you never enter. The class is close-quarters; its consequences are not.

THE QUESTIONS EVERYONE ASKS FIRST

What does Barbarian do well? Enormous melee damage, real tankiness, the best group utility in the game (shouts), and damage-while-moving on the spin build. It is the god-of-weapons fantasy, delivered.
What does it struggle with? Slow, resource-starved early levels; long cooldowns; and everything happens in melee range — there is no true ranged Barbarian, only long arms.
Is it difficult? The moment-to-moment play is the easiest in the game. The GEARING — four weapons, assignments, Expertise, Technique — is where the confusion lives, and it is exactly what Parts II and III untangle.
Why four weapons? Do I switch them myself? The Arsenal system. No — the game swaps automatically per skill, and you can override it per skill. Part II is entirely about this.
What is Expertise? What is Technique? Expertise: each weapon TYPE has a bonus that levels 1–10 as you use it. Technique: a slot that grants one chosen expertise at all times, whatever you hold. Not the same thing — Part III.
What is Fury? The rage meter: base cap 100, built in combat, drained by spenders, decaying out of combat. Part IV covers it and why it stops being a problem.
What are Berserking · Bleed · Fortify · Overpower? A damage-and-speed buff you maintain; physical damage over time; a grey under-bar that reduces damage taken; a 3%-chance mega-hit that scales with Life. All four in Part IV, in plain language.
Is it tanky? Is it mobile? Tanky: yes — shouts, Iron Skin, Fortify and armour stack absurdly. Mobile: more than it looks — Berserking is +30% movement, Leap and Charge close gaps, and Whirlwind damages while walking.

READING THE SKILL TREE

The budget. 69 points from levelling (one per level, 2 through 70) plus 14 bonus points — Season Rank on a seasonal character, Renown on Eternal. Total 83. Every build chapter here allocates all 83 and ends UNSPENT: 0 — no "put the rest wherever".
Upgrades per skill. Each active skill takes an Enhanced point, then ONE of two mutually exclusive upgrades. Those choices — Bursting, Scorching, Twister, Highlander — are where builds are actually born, and each chapter marks its picks with a filled diamond.
Categories: Basic, Core, Defensive, Brawling, Weapon Mastery, Ultimate. Clusters unlock in stages as you spend, so you cannot walk into a trap early — and respecs cost only gold, so nothing before 15 can be spent wrongly.
The class's real trap is off the tree. The tree is simple; the Arsenal is not. A perfect 83-point tree with one wrong weapon assignment loses half its damage silently. That is why this codex puts the weapons before the skills.

WHAT DOES THIS WORD MEAN?

The terms this codex leans on. The same definitions appear as hover tooltips everywhere else on the page — on mobile, tap them. Advanced mode adds the deep clause to each.

Arsenal
The Barbarian class mechanic: you carry four weapons at once and assign each attack skill to one of them. The game swaps weapons automatically when you cast.
WHY IT MATTERS · It is why a Barbarian sheet looks confusing. Two of your four weapons are usually there for their stats and aspects, not for swinging.
Stat Stick
A weapon you equip but never attack with. Its DPS number does nothing for you — its affixes, implicit and Legendary Aspect stay fully live from the sheath.
WHY IT MATTERS · Two or three of a Barbarian’s four weapons are usually stat sticks, and judging them by DPS is the most common gearing mistake in the class.
Weapon Assignment
Every attack skill either picks its weapon automatically — Auto-Select takes the compatible weapon with the highest DPS — or is locked to one slot by you.
WHY IT MATTERS · A skill deals its ASSIGNED weapon’s damage. One wrong assignment can cost half a build’s output.
Weapon Expertise
Each weapon type has its own bonus that levels from 1 to 10 as you use it, with an extra bonus unlocked at 10.
WHY IT MATTERS · Free, permanent, class-only power — and the reason a build tells you to hold a specific weapon type rather than the biggest number.
Technique Slot
A fifth expertise you get to keep at all times, regardless of what you are holding.
WHY IT MATTERS · It stacks with the expertise of the weapon in your hands, so you get two expertise bonuses at once.
Weapon Swap
There is no swap button. A swap happens when a cast uses a different Arsenal weapon than the previous cast — the Barbarian switches automatically, mid-combat.
WHY IT MATTERS · A few effects count swaps, but mostly swapping is a side effect of your assignments, not a mechanic you manage.
Weapon Implicit
The built-in line every weapon type carries above its affixes: Axes — damage to Healthy enemies, Maces — Overpower Damage, Swords — Critical Strike Damage, Polearms — Vulnerable Damage.
WHY IT MATTERS · Implicits are one of the real reasons a guide forces a weapon type that is not the biggest number in your stash.
Fury
The Barbarian’s rage meter. Base cap 100. Basic Skills generate it, Core Skills spend it, and it slowly drains when you leave combat.
WHY IT MATTERS · Fury is not just a cost this season — it is a damage stat. Ramaladni’s Magnum Opus, Edgemaster’s Aspect and the Sescheron’s Fury charm set all pay you for holding a full bar.
Berserking
A Barbarian-only buff: +25% damage and +30% movement speed while it lasts.
WHY IT MATTERS · Every build here treats 100% Berserking uptime as the baseline, not the goal — several items only pay out while you are Berserk.
Berserking uptime
The percentage of a fight you spend Berserk. Builds here aim for all of it.
WHY IT MATTERS · Uptime, not burst, is what makes a Barbarian feel strong — the damage buff, the movement speed and half your items ride on it.
Bleeding
Physical damage over time. It ticks after the hit lands instead of all at once.
WHY IT MATTERS · Bleed builds trade instant damage for damage that keeps happening — and because damage-over-time cannot Critically Strike, they sidestep every nerf aimed at crit builds.
Overpower
A chance for a hit to land massively harder. Base chance 3% on eligible skills — a number that cannot be raised, only bypassed by effects that GUARANTEE the next cast Overpowers. Overpowered hits show blue damage numbers.
WHY IT MATTERS · Overpower damage scales with your current Life plus your Fortify — the mechanic that turns a tanky Barbarian’s defence into burst.
Fortify
A grey bar layered over your health. While Fortified you take noticeably less damage.
WHY IT MATTERS · Two of the class’s biggest multipliers — Crushing Aspect and Overpower scaling — only pay while you are Fortified.
Vulnerable
A universal debuff: Vulnerable enemies take 20% more damage from everything.
WHY IT MATTERS · Cheap and huge. Double Swing applies it for free with the Twister upgrade, which is why that build runs Two-Handed Axe Technique.
Lucky Hit
A hidden dice roll on some hits. Gear says “Lucky Hit: up to X% chance to…”; the skill’s own Lucky Hit Chance decides how often the dice get thrown.
WHY IT MATTERS · Whirlwind and Double Swing hit constantly, so Lucky Hit effects feel permanent on them and unreliable on slow, heavy builds.
Critical Strike
A chance for a hit to land much harder. Chance is how often, Damage is how much extra.
WHY IT MATTERS · Three of the four builds here scale on crit. Rend deliberately does not — damage over time cannot crit at all.
Shouts
War Cry, Rallying Cry and Challenging Shout — area buffs you press rather than aim.
WHY IT MATTERS · They are not optional utility. Shouts are damage, resource, Fortify and cooldown reduction, and every build here runs all three.
Dust Devils
Small tornadoes your skills throw out, which travel and damage on their own.
WHY IT MATTERS · They are why Whirlwind clears a whole screen instead of just the enemies you touch.
The Ancients
Three summoned Barbarian champions who fight for you. Called by the Call of the Ancients ultimate — and, since Lord of Hatred, by shout upgrades too.
WHY IT MATTERS · It turns the Barbarian into a summoner. Ancient Skills deal x200% increased damage, which is the highest non-bugged damage profile in the game this season.
Channelling
Holding a skill down instead of pressing it — Whirlwind is the Barbarian’s only real channelled skill.
WHY IT MATTERS · Channelling has its own multiplier: Aspect of Channeling pays 50–70%[x] for all damage while you hold the button.
Unstoppable
Immunity to crowd control, and it breaks whatever is holding you when it triggers.
WHY IT MATTERS · Being stunned is how melee characters die. Iron Skin and Challenging Shout are your outs.
Barrier
A temporary shield that soaks damage before your health does.
WHY IT MATTERS · Iron Skin’s barrier is the Barbarian’s cheapest panic button, and it scales with Maximum Life.
Strength
The Barbarian’s main attribute: 1.1% damage per 10 points and 1 Armor per point.
WHY IT MATTERS · It is the only attribute that multiplies all of your damage, and it doubles as armour.
Tempering
A Blacksmith craft that adds one or two affixes you choose from themed manuals.
WHY IT MATTERS · It is how a random drop becomes your item — and how Barbarians fix Attack Speed, Cooldown Reduction and Weapon Crit Chance.
Masterworking
An endgame upgrade that adds ranks to everything on an item, with a big bonus hit every fourth step.
WHY IT MATTERS · It is where a finished item goes from good to build-defining.
Mythic
The top item tier: perfect affix rolls and a 30% boost to the item’s unique power.
WHY IT MATTERS · Season 14’s Mythic Unique 3.0 system means almost any unique can become one — your build’s key item is now a project, not a lottery.
Glyph
A socketed stone on a Paragon board that supercharges the nodes around it.
WHY IT MATTERS · Glyphs, not raw Paragon points, are where post-70 power comes from.
Runeword
Two runes socketed in the same item: one states a condition, the other spends it on an effect.
WHY IT MATTERS · The Cir + Vex pair gives a Barbarian a near-permanent +3 to all skill ranks, which is enormous and almost free.
Talisman
A Lord of Hatred system: a Seal that holds Charms, with set bonuses when the Charms match.
WHY IT MATTERS · Sescheron’s Fury is the Barbarian set and it is one of the largest multipliers in the game — if you can hold 100+ Fury.
The Pit
The timed endgame dungeon ladder, and the only place glyphs level.
WHY IT MATTERS · It gates Torment difficulty and therefore the endgame loot table.
Toughness
A single summary stat for how hard you are to kill — armour, resistances, damage reduction and Life rolled together.
WHY IT MATTERS · Current guidance for Barbarian is to watch Toughness and fix whatever is killing you, rather than chase fixed armour and resistance caps.
▶ PART II Why Am I Carrying Four Weapons? THE ARSENAL · THE CLASS MECHANIC
BEGINNER TL;DR
You equip four weapons at once: a two-handed bludgeon, a two-handed slasher, and a dual-wield pair. Every skill uses ONE of them — auto-picked by DPS, or assigned by you — and that weapon sets the skill’s damage. Meanwhile the affixes, implicits and Legendary Aspects of all four apply at all times, swung or not. Most Barbarian confusion is this one paragraph, unread.

THE FOUR SLOTS

■ TWO-HANDED BLUDGEONING
Two-handed maces · implicit: Overpower Damage
‖ DUAL WIELD 1
1H axe, sword or mace
‖ DUAL WIELD 2

▬ TWO-HANDED SLASHING
2H swords, axes, polearms · implicits: Crit Damage / dmg to Healthy / Vulnerable Damage
ALL FOUR EQUIPPED · ALL FOUR ALWAYS CONTRIBUTING STATS
THE WEAPON I AM SWINGING
Sets the skill’s damage — the DPS number your hit inherits — and its Weapon Expertise applies while it attacks. One skill, one weapon, every cast.
THE WEAPONS I AM CARRYING
Contribute their affixes, implicits, Legendary Aspects, sockets and tempers at all times, from the sheath. What stays dormant: their DPS and their Expertise. These are your stat sticks.
WHO PROVIDES WHAT
DPS of the hit → assigned weapon only
Expertise bonus → attacking weapon only (+ your Technique, always)
Affixes · implicits · aspects → all four, always
An empty or outdated slot → a dead multiplier

▼
GAME LISTS THE COMPATIBLE WEAPONS
▼
HIGHEST DPS AMONG THEM WINS
▼
THE ATTACK USES THAT WEAPON
▼
RE-EVALUATED AFTER EVERY GEAR CHANGE — SILENTLY
Is Auto usually okay? While levelling, yes — it picks the biggest number, and the biggest number is usually right. Every chapter here still says when to take over.
When should a beginner leave it on Auto? Levels 1–40, on everything except your main damage skill once its chapter names a slot.
When do I take over? The moment a build cares which weapon a skill uses — for its aspect, expertise, implicit, speed or unique power. In the endgame, your main attack is ALWAYS manually assigned, because Auto can silently move it onto a stat stick the day a shiny high-DPS drop lands in the wrong slot.
Why would a build force a “weaker” weapon? Because DPS is one input of five. Mighty Throw hurls the assigned weapon; Leap on the dual-wield pair casts faster and further; a fire Rend wants the slasher whose aspect doubles. The table below is the complete list of honest reasons.

ASSIGNING A WEAPON TO A SKILL

PC
Open the Skill Assignment menu (default S), hover the skill on your bar, and use the Cycle Weapon prompt shown under its description.
CONTROLLER / CONSOLE
Same menu: highlight the skill and press the button the Cycle Weapon prompt displays — the prompt shows your platform’s exact button on screen.
THE CYCLE
Each press steps Auto-Select → Dual Wield → Bludgeoning → Slashing. Only skills that can use more than one weapon type show the option at all.
THE HABIT · Re-check your assignments after every weapon upgrade. Each build chapter’s Arsenal card lists its REQUIRED assignments — they also appear in Play Mode.

STAT STICKS — AND THE DOUBLING RULE

WEAPON EQUIPPED
▼
YOU NEVER SWING IT
▼
AFFIXES + IMPLICIT + ASPECT + SOCKETS: STILL LIVE
▼
DPS + EXPERTISE: DORMANT — AND THAT’S FINE
WEAPON DPS ≠ AFFIX / ASPECT CONTRIBUTION
The doubling rule. Legendary Aspects imprinted on ANY weapon roll at double potency; on the amulet, ×1.5; everywhere else, ×1. That is why the biggest aspects in every build here sit on the two two-handed slots — including ones never swung.
Which aspect deserves a 2H slot? Build I: Channeling on the swung mace, Heavy Hitting on the sheathed slasher. Build III: Wanton Rupture on the sheathed mace. Build IV: Limitless Rage sheathed — and The Grandfather, whose unique power needs no imprint at all. Whether you attack with the weapon changes nothing about the aspect.
The canonical example. Build IV swings two one-handers while The Grandfather hangs on its back paying a 150%[x] Critical Strike Damage multiplier. Highest-value backpack in Sanctuary.
The classic mistake: replacing a stat stick because a new drop has a bigger DPS number. On a never-swung slot, DPS is the ONE stat that does not matter.

WHAT COUNTS AS SWAPPING WEAPONS?

Do I press a swap button? No such button exists. A swap happens when a cast uses a different Arsenal weapon than the previous cast — the character switches automatically, mid-swing, for free.
Does Skill A on a sword + Skill B on a hammer count? Yes — every alternation between them is one swap. This is how swap-counting effects are actually fed.
Does automatic selection count? Yes. Auto-picked and manually-assigned casts swap identically; the counter does not care who chose the weapon.
Do the two dual-wield weapons count as swapping? No — the pair is ONE Arsenal selection. Alternating hands inside Double Swing or Frenzy is not a swap between slots.
Can one skill swap weapons mid-cast? No. One cast, one weapon. The swap happens between casts, never inside one.
Are there bonuses for swapping? A few effects count swaps — the Furious Impulse passive pays Fury per swap, and older aspect texts counted them (Tempering Blows: Fortify after 6 swaps; Earthstriker’s: a guaranteed Overpower after 10). Earthstriker’s current Season 14 text reads as an Overpower damage bonus instead — trust the tooltip. None of this codex’s four builds counts swaps on purpose, which is why no chapter carries a swap tracker: the current meta simply does not play that way.

WHICH WEAPON IS BETTER?

Two weapons, one slot, and the green item-power arrow is lying to you. Answer one question first — what is this slot FOR? — then read the verdict.

Your skill inherits this weapon’s DPS, so raw Weapon Damage leads. Then weapon type (does it change your Expertise or the skill’s behaviour?), then implicit. Affixes are the tiebreak, not the headline — and re-run this comparison after every drop, because Auto-Select re-runs its own version constantly.
USE THIS ONE BECAUSE… → USE THE ONE WITH THE BIGGER DAMAGE NUMBER — unless the build names a weapon type.
▶ PART III Weapon Expertise & The Technique Slot TWO SYSTEMS, NOT ONE
EXPERTISE
Every weapon TYPE has a bonus that levels from rank 0 to 10 as you attack with it, plus an extra bonus at 10. It applies while that weapon is attacking. Unlocks at level 5, lives in the Expertise tab (Shift + C).
TECHNIQUE
A separate slot, unlocked by a level-15 quest, that grants ONE chosen expertise at all times, whatever you are holding. It stacks with the wielded weapon’s expertise — same type twice is legal and sometimes optimal. Free to change forever.
How does Expertise gain experience? On hit, not on kill — the weapon must actually strike enemies. Merely equipping it does nothing, PvP grants nothing, and both weapons of the dual-wield pair level together.
What happens at maximum rank? The bonus reaches full value and a second, rank-10-only bonus switches on — the Expertise tab shows both lines and a progress bar per type.
Can I benefit from an expertise without using that weapon? Only through the Technique slot — that is the entire reason it exists. A sheathed weapon’s expertise is otherwise dormant.
Does the Technique need to be leveled? Does it include the rank-10 bonus? The slot reads the expertise you leveled — needs rank 1 to slot, and Maxroll’s class overview says it grants the BASE effect only, not the rank-10 bonus. Some build writeups quote otherwise; the tooltip is final, and no pick in this codex hinges on the difference.
Should I grind every expertise? No. Your attacking weapons level themselves; the only deliberate work is getting your Technique’s type to rank 1+ — one Helltide session with it temporarily assigned to a skill.
When should it be maxed? Whenever it happens. By Torment your attacking types are at 10 without trying; nothing in these builds waits on an expertise grind.

THE SEVEN EXPERTISES

Values shown at rank 10 as printed by current sources — every expertise scales from rank 1 and the in-game Expertise tab (Shift + C) is final. Weapons gain Expertise XP on hit, not on kill; never from just being equipped; never in PvP; and both weapons of the dual-wield pair level together.

▶ PART IV Fury, Berserking, Bleed, Overpower & Not Dying EVERY MECHANIC, PLAINLY

FURY WITHOUT THE NONSENSE

What is Fury? The rage meter: base maximum 100, filled by fighting, spent by Core skills. It does not regenerate on its own — and it slowly DRAINS when you leave combat, so you never start a fight full.
What generates it? Basic skills, Rallying Cry (enormously, with Booming), Lucky Hit expertise lines, Tibault’s Will on Unstoppable, Tuskhelm while re-Berserking, the Furious Impulse passive per weapon swap — and taking damage, now capped at 0.5 Fury per 1% of Life lost this season.
Can maximum Fury increase? Yes — affixes, Paragon, and the Sescheron’s Fury 5-piece (+50). On any build holding Ramaladni’s, every point of ceiling is literally damage.
Why does Fury feel awful at low level, and infinite at 70? Because the engine is built, not given: Booming, three Fury Generation rolls, Tibault’s and Tuskhelm arrive one at a time. Every chapter marks the level its loop closes — usually the mid-30s to 40.
“WHY AM I ALWAYS OUT OF FURY?” — RUN THE CHECKS IN ORDER
▶1 · Are you leveling?
Then it is supposed to feel like this. TEMPORARY FIX: keep a Basic skill on the bar and use it. PERMANENT FIX: Rallying Cry’s Booming upgrade — every build here takes it before level 12.
▶2 · Is Booming actually taken, and pressed?
The single most common cause. CHECK the upgrade on Rallying Cry, then press it BEFORE contact, not as a rescue. It generates far more than it costs.
▶3 · Missing the build’s Fury aspect or unique?
Aspect of Berserk Fury, Tibault’s Will, Ring of Starless Skies, Tuskhelm — each chapter names which of these its loop assumes. Running Ramaladni’s WITHOUT generation is a self-inflicted drain: it charges 10 Fury per second by design.
▶4 · Gear rolls: do three armour slots say Fury Generation?
Chest, pants, boots. Willpower also raises resource generation. If none of your armour feeds the bar, no rotation will save it.
▶5 · Boss with no adds?
Normal — kill-based and crowd-based income disappears on single targets. TEMPORARY FIX: weave the Basic skill. PERMANENT FIX: the on-hit engines (2H Mace expertise, Tibault’s, Tuskhelm) that do not care how many enemies exist.
▶6 · Spamming into an empty bar?
Spenders that fizzle for lack of Fury waste the global cooldown too. Watch the bar for two fights: spend in bursts that end above zero, shout, repeat. If you did all six steps and it still starves, the build chapter’s troubleshooting has the build-specific answer.

WHAT THE HELL IS BERSERKING?

Buff or resource? A buff — a timed state, not a meter. While it runs: +25%[x] damage and +30% movement speed. The damage half is multiplicative, which is why items obsess over it.
How do I know I’m Berserking? Your character glows red and a red bar appears over your health globe. If you cannot see red, you are not Berserk — check the bar, not the theory.
How is it activated? War Cry and Wrath of the Berserker grant it directly; several skill upgrades add it; and Aspect of Anger Management grants it automatically while you hold 50+ Fury — the backbone of permanent uptime on all four builds.
Does it stack? Can it be extended? Bonuses from different sources add together while their independent timers overlap. Duration per source is short — a few seconds — and some effects extend it: Build IV’s Double Swing stretches Berserking with every cast.
Can it get stronger? Yes — most famously Tuskhelm of Joritz: gaining Berserking WHILE already Berserk pays 40–50%[x] damage, 6 Fury per second and 10% cooldown reduction. Overlapping sources on purpose is an endgame skill.
Which builds need permanent Berserking? All four assume it remains active. Build IV loses about half its damage without it, and Build I loses it automatically below 50 Fury. If Berserking ends, check your Fury generation first.

BLEEDING · AND OVERPOWER WITHOUT A MATH DEGREE

BLEEDING — PHYSICAL DAMAGE OVER TIME
What is it? The hit lands once; the Bleed keeps ticking afterwards. Overlapping applications pool — nothing is wasted.
Can Bleed crit or Overpower? No and no — damage over time can do neither. That immunity cuts both ways: crit gear does nothing for it, and crit NERFS miss it entirely.
What scales it? The application’s weapon damage, damage-over-time and Bleed multipliers, DURATION (a straight multiplier), and Vulnerable on the target.
What reads “Bleeding enemies”? A small ecosystem — Slaking’s Fury, Anemia’s stuns, Rupture’s pool detonation, the 2H Sword expertise. The dedicated bleed toolkit is real and current.
So why is Build III “fire”? Its Scorching upgrade CONVERTS Rend’s bleed into Fire burning — same damage-over-time logic, different bucket. Bleed-specific bonuses stop reading it; generic DoT and Fire bonuses take over. That conversion is the single most instructive gearing lesson in this codex.
OVERPOWER — THE LIFE-POWERED MEGA-HIT
Plain English: some hits randomly land MUCH harder, adding damage that scales with your current Life plus Fortify. A tank stat becomes burst.
The chance: 3%, fixed — you cannot raise it, only bypass it with effects that GUARANTEE the next eligible cast Overpowers. Guarantees are consumed one per cast.
Reading the numbers: blue = Overpowered, orange = Overpowered AND Critical — yes, they can coincide, and they multiply.
What can never Overpower: damage over time, channelled skills, passives. Whirlwind is channelled and Rend’s burn is a DoT — which is why Builds I and III ignore the system entirely, and why stacking Overpower Damage on every Barbarian is a trap.
Who cares, then? Builds with big, slow, guaranteed hits — and Build III’s ultimate window: Wrath stacks Overpower while it runs, feeding Cremator’s 4-stack condition. Willpower and Maximum Life are the scaling levers. Season 14 trimmed the wider ecosystem (Tidal, Dominate) — old Overpower plans overpromise.

A grey fill under your health globe — not extra health, a THRESHOLD. While your Fortify is at or above your current Life you are Fortified and take reduced damage.
Gained from Challenging Shout, Bash’s upgrade, Ground Stomp and Paragon; capped at Maximum Life; chipped down as you take hits.
Why offence cares: Overpower reads it, and Crushing Aspect pays 45–65%[x] while Fortified — every build here shouts for damage, not just safety.
THE THREE SHOUTS
Rallying Cry — resource generation + movement. It does NOT buff damage. Press for Fury, and it costs Fury rather than a cooldown this season.
War Cry — damage + Berserking. It does NOT protect you. Press before the fight, not during the regret.
Challenging Shout — taunt + heavy damage reduction + Fortify. Its damage-bonus upgrade does nothing to bosses (they cannot be taunted). All three buff your party too — Barbarians are welcome everywhere.
THORNS — THE HONEST FOOTNOTE
Flat damage dealt back when enemies HIT you with direct attacks — melee or ranged, bosses included. Enemies that rarely attack barely feed it, which is why it soars in dense packs and sulks in boss arenas.
The Barbarian can stack it (Challenging Shout’s upgrade line, Strength, gear) — but no Barbarian Thorns archetype makes the Season 14 lists, and this codex will not pretend otherwise. The porcupine fantasy currently lives on the Spiritborn’s Gorilla.
Do I press all my shouts at once? Build-specific, and each chapter answers it. Short version — I: stagger by job (Rallying on cooldown, War before packs, Challenging when surrounded). II: STACK all three before every Call window; the multipliers multiply. III: War BEFORE applying Rend, Challenging after landing. IV: War on contact, the rest reactive.
Why can the endgame keep shouts up permanently? Cooldown reduction on helm and jewellery, Tuskhelm’s 10%, and the Marshal glyph — shouts reducing each other’s downtime. The leveling version has none of these; that gap, not your rotation, is why your uptime looks worse than the video’s.

WHY IS MY BARBARIAN STILL DYING?

INCOMING DAMAGE
▼
ARMOR (PHYSICAL) · RESISTANCES (ELEMENTAL)
▼
DAMAGE REDUCTION (SHOUTS · ASPECTS · WHILE FORTIFIED)
▼
BARRIER (IRON SKIN · QUE RUNE) SOAKS FIRST
▼
HEALING · POTIONS · LIFE ON HIT
▼
LIFE — THE LAST LAYER, NOT THE DEFENCE
LOTS OF LIFE ≠ INVINCIBLE. Life is the bucket, not the lid. A 40,000-Life Barbarian with open resistances dies to one elemental affix; a 25,000-Life one with capped mitigation walks through it.
FORTIFY ≠ EXTRA HEALTH. It is a state: reduced damage while the grey bar covers your current Life. It does not absorb anything by itself — Barriers do that.
· Died to physical hits → armour and Skull sockets. · Died to an elemental pool → that resistance and Diamonds. · Died stunned → Iron Skin discipline (Unstoppable). · Died in one hit at full everything → drop a Torment tier; the sheet, not the rotation, is behind.
· Current guidance for this class is to watch the Toughness summary stat and diagnose the death you actually died, rather than chase fixed armour and resistance caps — sources conflict on whether the old caps still exist, and the endgame chapter flags it.
PART V

FOUR BARBARIANS

Four genuinely different characters, not four gear variants. One holds a button and routes the map, one conducts three summoned champions, one sets rooms on fire and leaves, and one deletes bosses with two hands and a borrowed sword it never draws. Together they teach the whole class.

▶RESEARCH & SOURCES FOR THIS BUILD
Verified against current sources: Icy Veins — Whirlwind – Barbarian Leveling for Diablo 4 (Season 14) (https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/whirlwind-barbarian-leveling-build/). The saved tree, node graph, unlock gates, final distribution, and published bar were locked 2026-08-26T13:19:35Z.
Synthesized (my ordering and framing): No skill, rank total, bar choice, item, or final allocation is invented. Level ordering is mechanically derived from the same source tree and its published unlock gates.
Flagged as uncertain: The source does not always publish a narrative leveling order. Codex preserves its node edit priority while deferring locked nodes; unsupported timing prose and Paragon advice stay suppressed.

▶RESEARCH & SOURCES FOR THIS BUILD
Verified against current sources: Icy Veins — Dust Devil Double Swing – Barbarian Build for Diablo 4 (Season 14) (https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/dust-devil-barbarian-build/).

Season 14's Barbarian ladder: the Ancients archetype holds the highest non-bugged ceiling (Pit ~140+) with Whirlwind the best all-rounder beside it; Rend sits S-tier on nerf-resistance and Double Swing a boss-farming specialist a tier below. Charge builds exist at A-tier and are not covered here — four chapters, four genuinely different lessons. Checked August 17, 2026.
▶ PART VI Unlocks, Paragon & The Endgame Map TORMENT · PARAGON · TALISMANS
CLASS UNLOCKS — DO NOT MISS THESE
LEVEL 2
First skill point. Fury exists from the start, builds in combat, drains outside it — the generator-spender rhythm is the class before any mechanic is.
LEVEL 5 · THE ARSENAL
The Expertise tab (Shift + C) and weapon assignment open. Assign your main attack to the slot its chapter names, and re-check after every weapon upgrade — forever.
LEVEL 15 · MASTERS OF BATTLE
The priority quest in Ked Bardu unlocks the Technique slot — a fifth expertise, always on. Ten minutes; do it the level it appears. A Barbarian without a Technique is playing with a system off.
LEVEL ~40–60 · THE ENGINE ERA
The items that close each loop — Gohr's, Tuskhelm, Ring of the Ravenous, Ramaladni's, The Grandfather — come into reach. Every chapter marks the level its build is "born".
LEVEL 60 · TALISMAN SEAL
Target a Legendary Seal with +1 Charm Slot: the Sescheron's Fury five-piece plus Emblem of Staalbreak. The set's Colossal bonus wants 100+ Fury — which these builds hold anyway.
LEVEL 70 · THE PIT
Paragon, glyph levelling and Torment climbing start here. Your build does not change; your items do — and your 14 bonus points finish the tree.
THE LADDER
Difficulty runs Normal → Hard → Expert → Penitent, then Torment 1–12. Torment is where endgame loot lives; The Pit is the gate between tiers.
Each Torment step applies penalties, so mitigation comes before damage rolls. Current Barbarian guidance is to watch the Toughness summary and diagnose the death you actually died — sources conflict on whether the old "1,000 Armor, 70% resistance" caps still bind, and this codex flags rather than resolves it.
Top Barbarian builds clear around Pit 140 with strong gear; every chapter's ratings assume that scale.
PARAGON — BEGINNER VERSION
Past 70, XP becomes Paragon points. Boards attach in a chain; each exists to reach a Legendary node and socket a Glyph.
First moves: Starter board straight to its Legendary node, socket whichever glyph reads your build (each chapter names its three, in order), ignore "+damage" filler until the glyph radius is worth filling.
Glyphs level in The Pit — bring a tier you clear comfortably, not your record. The Dominate glyph was gutted this season (23.6% → 1.8% per stack): any pre-3.1 Paragon sheet is stale.
TEMPERING & MASTERWORKING
Temper the attacking weapon first — Critical Strike Chance on the slot your main skill is assigned to is the class staple. Stat sticks temper for their build's multiplier (Fire damage, DoT, All Resistances on armour); each gear card names its slot's pick.
Masterwork the weapon your skill actually swings before anything else — its every fourth step lands a large bonus on one affix; aim it at the bolded stat on the gear card, and reset if it hits a junk line. Beginner rule: DO the attacking weapon first. Advanced rule: WHY — its DPS multiplies everything, a stat stick's does not.
Temper cheaply while levelling, keep materials for pieces you intend to keep — bricking rerolls is normal, not failure.
TALISMAN · RUNEWORDS · MYTHICS
Talisman: Sescheron's Fury is the Barbarian set — Colossal above 100 Fury, Life and Maximum Fury bonuses climbing to a 600%[x] payoff at five pieces. Bloodletter's Flow (the bleed set) only reads BLEEDS — Build III's fire Rend cannot use it; the most common charm mistake in the class.
Runewords: two-handers carry the sockets. Cir + Vex is a near-permanent +3 to all skill ranks from a sheathed weapon; Bac + Gar converts movement into crit chance for the spin build.
Mythics: craft with 4 Pandemonium Fragments — Ramaladni's Magnum Opus first on every build here, then chase The Grandfather and Tuskhelm as drops. One crafted Mythic worn at a time; dropped ones unrestricted.
▶ PART VII Research & Sources WHAT'S VERIFIED, WHAT ISN'T

Everything here targets Season 14 · Death Awakening · patch 3.1.3 (live August 12), checked against current sources on August 17, 2026. Each build chapter carries its own source breakdown; this is the page-wide ledger.

THE BIGGEST STALENESS RISK · Barbarian advice ages badly in three specific ways: launch-era mechanics (Fury-from-damage farming, old shout uptime math), pre-rework trees (Key-Passive-centred builds and 5-rank skills describe a game that no longer exists), and pre-3.1 item values (Limitless Rage, Cremator's, Tidal, Dominate and Endurant Faith were all cut — sheets quoting the old numbers over-promise). Check any guide's patch line before copying it.
OFFICIAL / PATCH-LEVEL · Season and patch baseline (Season 14 · 3.1.3, live Aug 12 — seasonal objectives and class bug fixes only); the 3.0.2 fix keeping Ancients alive through Arsenal swaps; 3.0.3's Whirling Lunging Strike and Sescheron's visual fixes; the Season 14 change list summarised on the cover.
CURRENT BUILD SOURCES · Icy Veins' Season 14 Barbarian set — "Whirlwind Barbarian" (upd. Jul 13, 2026), "Rend Barbarian" (upd. Jun 28, 2026), "Call of the Ancients Barbarian" and the Barbarian Leveling Guide (upd. Jun 28, 2026) — cross-checked against Maxroll's S14 Barbarian guides and NextTier's S14 Barbarian overview (upd. Jul 20, 2026). Tier framing: Ancients the ceiling, Whirlwind the all-rounder, Rend S-tier, Double Swing the boss specialist.
MECHANICS REFERENCE · Maxroll's Barbarian class overview and Arsenal-system pages (Arsenal at level 5; expertise XP on hit, not kill, none in PvP, dual-wield levels both; the Cycle Weapon flow Auto → Dual Wield → Bludgeoning → Slashing; Auto-Select picking highest DPS; Technique via the level-15 Masters of Battle quest in Ked Bardu, requiring rank 1+, stacking with wielded expertise); Berserking's +25%[x] / +30% form with red-glow indicator and cumulative sources; Overpower's fixed 3% base, Life + Fortify scaling, blue/orange numbers, and the DoT/channelled/passive exclusions.
MINE, NOT TRANSCRIBED · The level-by-level point orders (69 + 14 per build, machine-checked to total 83), priority labels, star ratings, engine diagrams, Fury chains, MAINTAIN panels, the Arsenal Visualizer's framing, Technique cards, band-by-band levelling notes, Paragon ordering and the comparison verdicts. No published guide gives a per-level order; the order here is a teaching decision and respecs are cheap.
UNCERTAIN · FIVE HONEST GAPS · (1) Whether the Technique slot grants a rank-10 additional bonus — Maxroll says base effect only, several build writeups quote otherwise; no pick here hinges on it. (2) Expertise numbers are printed at commonly reported values; the in-game tab is final. (3) Unnamed paired skill upgrades are described by effect, never invented. (4) Armor/resistance caps vs Toughness — current sources conflict; flagged wherever it appears. (5) The 12-vs-14 bonus point discrepancy between sites — this codex uses 14 (83 total) to match the rest of the system; if your tree ends short, the missing pair is an unclaimed Season Rank or Renown reward. Also flagged: Earthstriker's swap-counting text appears reworked this season — trust the tooltip.
