A plain-language guide to the systems Diablo IV does not explain clearly.
You already know the loop that matters — kill monsters, gain levels, spend points, wear the better item. This manual is for everything AROUND that loop: what each system is, why it exists, when it unlocks, what goes in, what comes out, and how it connects to the others. Chapters I, II and XIV are already open; the rest wait until you need them.

Salvaging permanently destroys an item and gives you crafting materials. Salvaging a Legendary also saves or upgrades its Aspect in the Codex of Power. If the appearance is new, it is added to your Wardrobe. Salvaged items cannot be bought back.
“I found a Legendary item with a useful power, but the item itself is bad. How does salvaging it help me?”
Every activity answers the same questions — including which system its reward feeds — and carries its gate label up front: BASE GAME, VESSEL OF HATRED, LORD OF HATRED or SEASONAL. Base-game players never need to hunt a door they do not own.
Nobody memorizes the materials tab, and you should not try. Every material belongs to a SYSTEM — learn the systems (they each have a chapter above) and every icon becomes guessable. The header search finds any specific name.
The salvage economy. Everything here comes from destroying items — which is why "salvage, don’t sell" is rule one.
Mostly a GOLD sink — the material cost is small; the escalating gold is the real price.
Cheap per attempt; the scroll is the item that matters.
The Pit’s economy. No Pit runs, no Masterworking — that is the design.
If you do not own the expansion, this group never drops for you — skip it guilt-free.
The forgiving group — nothing here is ever wasted, because gems always come back out.
Socketables and a crafting currency in one.
Keys in, keys out.
One key type per boss TIER since Lord of Hatred — the old per-boss shopping list of hearts and eggs is gone.
SEASONAL ONLY. Spend them; do not curate a museum.
Money-shaped things that never touch the crafting bench. Nothing here sells gameplay power.
Two passes. First: every system researched against current sources and written. Second: each explanation attacked — searched specifically for renames, reworks, removed currencies, changed vendors and unlock requirements, expansion and realm gating that would make it wrong. Where sources still disagree, the page says so instead of picking a side. Everything targets the live game only; pre-2026 mechanics appear solely as labeled warnings.
