NECROMANCER

THE COMPLETE BUILD GUIDE
SEASON 14 · DEATH AWAKENINGPATCH 3.1.3LAST VERIFIED AUG 16, 2026

Skeletons that raise themselves, a Book that can sacrifice them, corpses carpeting the floor, Essence draining for no visible reason. This chapter answers the questions a new Necromancer actually has — what are my minions doing, what is this corpse for, and am I the one dealing the damage or are they? — then gives you four complete builds, every skill point from level 2 to 70, respecs included.

PART I Understanding the Necromancer 10 MIN · START HERE

THE CLASS IN FIVE IDEAS

1 · YOU ARE NEVER ALONE (UNLESS YOU CHOOSE TO BE)
Skeletal Warriors raise themselves from nearby corpses, Mages are summoned, a Golem follows you after a level-25 quest. Minions are the default, not an obligation — the Book of the Dead can trade any of them for personal power, and two of this codex's four builds do.
2 · TWO RESOURCES, ONE VISIBLE
Essence is your mana bar. Corpses are the second resource — physical piles on the floor that raise warriors, feed mages, and fuel corpse skills. Half of feeling competent on this class is treating the floor as a wallet.
3 · THE BOOK OF THE DEAD
The class mechanic: a separate menu deciding what each minion family is. Since the Lord of Hatred rework, Sacrifice reduces a minion instead of deleting it — half power for you-sized bonuses. Part II is the full chapter.
4 · FOUR SCHOOLS, FOUR JOBS
Minions kill for you. Blood turns your Life pool into a weapon (Overpower). Bone spends Essence on direct crits. Shadow rots ground and stacks damage over time. Every build here is one school with cameos from the others.
5 · TAGS DECIDE WHAT YOUR GEAR DOES
The reworked tree loves converting skills: Reaper Warriors count as Darkness, a node re-tags Skeleton Mage as a Corpse skill, and the top Blood build re-tags an Ultimate as a Core skill. Gear scales tags — when a tag changes, gear silently starts (or stops) working. Part IV maps every conversion these builds use.

NECROMANCER, WARLOCK OR SORCERER?

TL;DR
Three casters in robes. The Necromancer is the one with a standing army and a second resource lying on the floor: the Warlock rents demons a few seconds at a time, the Sorcerer works alone. If the appeal is "the dead fight for me, and everything on the battlefield — even the corpses — is a tool", you are in the right chapter.

THE QUESTIONS EVERYONE ASKS FIRST

Do I have to use minions? No. Two of the four builds here are casters that sacrifice most of the army — and thanks to the reworked sacrifice rule, even they keep half-strength skeletons walking around as furniture.
Can minions deal MOST of my damage? Yes — Build I is exactly that. You debuff, command and feed; the army kills. Every build chapter opens with a "who deals the damage" label so you're never guessing.
Can I sacrifice some and keep others? Yes, per family. Build III sacrifices Warriors and Golem but keeps its Mages as an Essence battery. Mixing is normal, not exotic.
Can I play pure Blood / Bone / Shadow? Yes to all three — II, III and IV respectively. Each one names what it borrows from the other schools and why.
Can I build around Corpses? Yes — Build IV treats the floor as its wallet: Tendrils spends corpses, mages eat them, the golem sheds them on command.
Can I use a Golem without Skeletons? Mechanically yes (the families are independent), and dedicated golem builds exist. None of this codex's four leans that way — the closest is III, which keeps only Mages.
Is Necromancer beginner-friendly? The most, arguably: Build I works on cheap gear, forgives mistakes, and its damage continues while you learn. III is the hard one — save it for a second character.
What is the class bad at? Raw mobility (one dash, borrowed from a skill), and — for the army builds — precision: an army can be aimed, not sniped. The caster builds trade the safety net for exactly that precision.

READING THE SKILL TREE

The budget. 69 points from levelling (one per level, 2 through 70) plus 14 bonus points — Season Rank on a seasonal character, Renown on Eternal. Total 83. Every build here accounts for all 83 and none ends with "spend the rest wherever".
No Key Passive. The Lord of Hatred rework removed the capstone slot entirely. Any guide finishing its tree with Shadowblight, Ossified Essence, Rathma's Vigor or Kalan's Edict is describing a game that no longer exists — those ideas now live scattered through ordinary passives.
Upgrades per skill. Each active skill carries 1 Major and 2 Minor upgrades. Majors often rewrite what a skill IS — every filled diamond in these trees is explained, and the deliberately skipped ones are named.
Categories: Basic, Core, Macabre, Corruption (curses live here), Summoning and Ultimate, unlocking in stages — curses at 13, ultimates by 28. The summons are real tree skills now, not just Book pages.
The class's real trap: tag-changing upgrades. Gift of Death makes Skeleton Mage a Corpse skill. Hematolagnia makes Blood Wave a Core skill. One Blight variant converts Shadow damage to Blood. Your gear multiplies tags — re-tagging into your gear is a jump, re-tagging out of it silently deletes half your damage. Read the tag line before spending the point; Part IV keeps the full map.

A separate menu, not the skill tree. For each minion family — Warriors, Mages, Golem — you pick a variant (what it is), then an upgrade or a Sacrifice. Changing is free, instant, and doesn't touch your skill points. It decides what your army IS — it is as important as your bar, and the game will never force you to open it.

I want the easiest Necromancer → Build I, without hesitation
I want the strongest current endgame Necromancer → Build II · Blood Wave — the consensus pick across Maxroll, Mobalytics and the tier sites this patch, with Bone Spirit its bossing rival
Honesty note: Necromancer sits A-tier as a class this season, not S — Barbarian and Rogue top the overall lists. Blood Wave is its highest-DPS build (Pit 135+ reported); the Legion is its most beloved. Both readings were checked in August 2026.
PART VI Unlocks, Paragon & The Endgame Map TORMENT · PARAGON · TALISMANS
CLASS UNLOCKS — DO NOT MISS THESE
LEVEL 2
First skill point. Essence exists from the start; corpses start mattering the moment anything dies near you.
LEVEL 5 · BOOK OF THE DEAD
The class mechanic opens, silently. Go set your Warrior and Mage pages — a Necromancer who never opens the Book is playing half a class.
LEVEL 13 · CURSES
The Corruption cluster unlocks. One point in Decrepify is correct in all four builds.
LEVEL ~25 · THE GOLEM QUEST
Call of the Underworld appears as a priority quest. Ten minutes, permanent golem. Do it the level it appears — nothing else will remind you.
LEVEL ~50 · BOOK TIER 2
Second-tier upgrades and the big sacrifice decisions. Every build chapter marks its swap.
LEVEL 60 · TALISMAN SEAL
A Legendary Seal with +1 Charm Slot is the target: six slots fits a five-piece set plus one Unique Charm.
LEVEL 70 · THE PIT
Paragon, glyph levelling and Torment climbing start. Your build doesn't change; your items do.
THE LADDER
Difficulty runs Normal → Hard → Expert → Penitent, then Torment 1–12. Torment is where endgame loot lives.
The Pit (unlocks at 70) is the gate: clear around tier 10 to open Torment 1, then keep climbing as your glyphs grow.
Each Torment tier applies a resistance penalty — keep Armor capped (1,000) and all Resistances at 70%+ before chasing damage. Even behind an army: the hits that reach you are the ones that matter.
PARAGON — BEGINNER VERSION
Past 70, XP becomes Paragon points, shared across your realm's characters. You attach up to five boards; each exists to reach a Legendary node and socket a Glyph.
First board: Starter. First path: straight at the Legendary node, ignoring everything else. First glyph: whichever reads your school — minion, Blood, Bone or Shadow.
What Paragon is doing for you: the boards ARE your late multipliers — a minion board makes the army scale past gear; the corpse board's Flesh-eater node is why two builds eat a corpse on a timer.
ADVANCED PARAGON & GLYPHS
Per board: Legendary node → glyph socket → rare nodes inside the glyph radius → filler. A board with no glyph is worth roughly half of one with.
Level Glyphs by clearing The Pit — rank 25 first for radius, ~50 for the second bonus; attempts can fail, so upgrade at tiers you clear comfortably.
School glyphs before generic damage glyphs, always — and DoT builds (IV) skip crit nodes entirely; minion builds (I) treat "+minion attack speed" rares as gold. Each chapter lists its own order.
TALISMAN · TEMPER · MASTERWORK
Talisman: the Necromancer sets that matter are Rathma's Waking Touch (minions — AotD cooldown engine), Word of the Blood Binder (Blood — the ×75% set behind Blood Wave, with the Red Blessing charm) and Berú of the Black Shroud (Darkness). No Bone set verified this season.
Tempering: chase your school's manual — "minion attacks Fortify you" (I), Essence/sec (II), Resolve stacks (III), Shadow damage (IV). A tag-changing node can invalidate a temper you already paid for — re-read tags first.
Masterworking: +ranks to everything, with a large bonus every fourth step. Aim those crits at the affix your build's gear card lists first (II: Essence/sec on the pants · III: Max Essence anywhere), and only on pieces you intend to keep.
SEASON 14 NOTES — WHAT CHANGED FOR NECROMANCER
Hematolagnia — Blood Wave re-tagged Ultimate → Core: no cooldown, 50 Essence, the meta build
Summoner buffs — Death Awakening strengthened minion scaling and mobility; warriors self-raise
Bone Spirit — its reworked upgrade removed the cooldown; the archetype returned
Overpower cut — Dominate glyph 23.6% → 1.8% per stack; Banished Lord's 15–18% → 8–10%
Heir of Perdition nerfed — no longer the default Necro helm; Crown of Lucion takes its place where it fits
April Hotfix 2 — Iron Maiden's Schadenfreude variant and Bone Prison's Bramble variant nerfed
Kessime's Legacy — 3.1.1 reworked its fixed affixes (Int + CDR) and fixed a drop-rate bug
Mythic 3.0 — craft chase Mythics with Pandemonium Fragments (4 per upgrade since 3.1.1; the Corrupted Reaper drops up to two per kill); 2 guaranteed + 2 random affixes, one rerollable
Mid-season bug repairs — Shadow-Mage DoT upgrades now benefit from damage multipliers, and Deathgrip's bonus was under-rolling and got fixed. A guide calling either weak predates the repair
Patches 3.1.1–3.1.3 were bug-fix and quality-of-life patches with no class balance changes — a build verified early in the season is still current at 3.1.3, and this codex is dated 3.1.3 out loud.
PART VII Research & Sources WHAT'S VERIFIED, WHAT ISN'T

Everything here targets Season 14 · Death Awakening · patch 3.1.3, checked against live sources on August 16, 2026. The Necromancer has been in the game since launch — most guides a search returns describe a class several reworks out of date.

THE BIGGEST STALENESS RISKS · The Lord of Hatred rework removed Key Passives (goodbye, old Shadowblight capstone), raised the cap to 70, made summons real tree skills, retired Raise Skeleton and the Skeletal Priest (warriors self-raise; the button commands), and changed Sacrifice to reduce minions instead of deleting them. Any guide leaning on those five old facts — which is most of them — describes a game that no longer exists.
OFFICIAL / PATCH-LEVEL · Season and patch baseline (Season 14 · Death Awakening · 3.1.3), the Season 14 balance notes in the endgame chapter (Overpower cuts, Hotfix 2 nerfs, Kessime's 3.1.1 rework, Mythic 3.0 and Pandemonium crafting), and the 69 + 14 skill-point budget.
CURRENT BUILD SOURCES · Maxroll's Season 14 Necromancer guides and tier lists (Blood Wave · Bone Spirit · Blight leveling & endgame · Army of the Dead, updated June–August 2026), Icy Veins' Season 14 Summoner Leveling, Reaper Summoner and Blood Blight guides, Mobalytics' Ultimate Bloodwave, and the cross-site tier consensus (DiabloBytes, leprestore, expcarry, IGGM, NextTier, RPGStash, EZG) — used for bars, Book pages, gear, sets, rotations and tier placements.
MECHANICS REFERENCE · Book of the Dead structure (3 families × 3 variants × 2 upgrades + Sacrifice; tier 2 at ~50), the reworked keep-at-reduced sacrifice bonuses, Gift of Death (+127% Essence regen, Corpse re-tag), Hematolagnia's exact terms (50 Essence, 300%, no knockback), Bursting Bones' max-Essence cap (200), skill databases for base numbers (Blight 40% + 210%/6s · Hemorrhage 13 Essence, 20% orb · Splinters 3×30%), and current-era minion inheritance (full crit chance / attack speed / Lucky Hit).
MINE, NOT TRANSCRIBED · The level-by-level point orders (no published guide gives one; each sums to 69 + 14 and lands on the sourced final tree), the two printed respecs and their timing, priority labels, star ratings, engine diagrams, the corpse-economy spend order, troubleshooting trees, and every "until then" fallback.
UNCERTAIN · FIVE HONEST GAPS · (1) Bloodless Scream's frozen-target multiplier is reported anywhere from ×100–125% to ×200–250% depending on roll and Mythic upgrade — treated as "giant" rather than quoted. (2) Bone Spirit's no-cooldown node and several minion branch nodes are printed by function, not by in-game name. (3) Soulrift's tooltip — described by role only. (4) Fine-print inheritance (crit damage, Thorns shares) is labelled COMMUNITY TESTING in Part III's table. (5) Blighted / Decay aspect percentages this season — effects verified by archetype history, numbers omitted.
